Atascosa County is located immediately to the south of Bexar County and the city of San Antonio. It is named for the river which bisects it. The county seat was originally Pleasanton; but in 1910 was moved to Jourdanton, which was established rather late for Texas, in the early 1900s. It is also the birthplace of country singing star George Strait.

Poteet is famous for the yearly strawberry festival, held every year in April – and claimed to be the largest agricultural festival in Texas.
