The 60th Annual Poteet Strawberry Festival is set to kick off on the weekend of April 13-15, 2007. For those that don't know what the festival is, rest assured it's much more than just strawberries (although there are plenty of those)! The festival is one of Texas' most popular annual gatherings, typically drawing more than 100,000 people from all over the United States, and infusing the local economy with around $10 million each year, and offering a real glimpse into what makes Texas tick!
The attractions featured are suitable for the whole family, and feature an Arts and Crafts show, Festival Rodeo, dances, food exhibitions, auctions, gunfights, a strawberry eating contest, shopping, helicopter rides, and the Alamo Attractions Carnival. . .oh, and did we forget to mention music? This year’s nationally-acclaimed country music headliners are Craig Morgan and Pam Tillis. Craig Morgan is one of the hottest new country music stars to burst onto the scene in recent years, producing such hits as Almost Home, I Got You, and That’s What I Love About Sunday, which was the most popular song of the year, spending over a month at number one on the charts! Craig will be performing Saturday, April 14 at 5 P.M. Pam Tillis is the ultra-talented singer/songwriting daughter of the legendary Mel Tillis, and author of such hits as Don’t Tell Me What to Do, Mi Vida Loca, Shake the Sugar Tree, and Let That Pony Run. Pam was the CMA Female Vocalist of the Year in 1994, and will be performing on Sunday, April 15 at 5 P.M. Also, many tejano acts will be performing, and there are many opportunities to dance and enjoy real southwestern culture.
A new addition to the Poteet Strawberry Festival this year is the BBQ Cook-Off. If you have a hankering for some good old-fashioned South Texas grub, you won’t want to miss this! The prize money goes to benefit the Festival Scholarship Fund, and the winners receive prizes, trophies, and ribbons, and will be judged on what culinary concoctions they can conceive for chicken, brisket, spare ribs, and beans. The cook-off is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, with judging times throughout the day. Come on down and see what’s cooking!
In addition to enjoying all the good eats, tunes, and shows, be sure not to miss the Lion’s Club Rodeo, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at 2 P.M. The action this year features bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, tiedown calf roping, team roping, girl’s barrel racing, and bull riding. This is a great chance to bring the kids to see real cowboys doing their thing.
This year’s Poteet Strawberry Festival should be another in a long line of exciting, educational, and entertaining exhibitions. Entrance is free on Friday evening, and admission is $10 for adults, and children under 12 are admitted free on Saturday and Sunday. Round up all your friends and family and head down for what is sure to be a great southwestern weekend!
