Spurs Drop Game One to Mavs
Game one went to the Mavs. Now, the Spurs have their work cut out for them. San Antonio dropped the first game to their in-state, division rivals from Dallas, 105-97. What should be even more disturbing for San Antonio, is that Dallas is not a particularly good road team. In fact, they are just 18-23 this season away from home.
San Antonio played well, and shot the three probably the best they have all season, making 11 of 14 for a torrid 78% rate. Their perimeter defense was strong also, holding the Mavs to just 5-17, for a 29% rate.
Tony Parker and Tim Duncan were as good as ever. Duncan led the team with 27 points and 9 rebounds, while Parker scored 24 and handed out 8 assists. Parker did have 5 turnovers, however. Michal Finley was tremendous too, adding 19 points, and going 5-5 from behind the arc. Unfortunately, no one else was really able to step up and fill the void left by Manu Ginobili.
Dallas was by far the deeper team this night, getting double digit scoring from six players, Josh Howard led the Mavs with 25 points. One small difference for the Mavs was the play of the smallest player on the court, 6-foot tall Jose Barea. Barea played Parker tough all night, and especially in the fourth quarter, held Parker to just 2-6 shooting, while scoring 13 points of his own.
The Spurs opened the game with a double digit lead, and entered the fourth quarter tied. The fourth quarter, though, was where the Spurs really missed Ginobili. San Antonio fans know that the final period is Manu's time to shine, and where his energy helps wear the other team down. His drives in the lane and defensive pressure were sorely missed. In the final period, the Mavs outscored the Spurs 31-23.
Some history is on the Spurs' side, however. In 2007, the Spurs lost the first game at home to Denver in that series. The Spurs then went on to win the next four games and the series. Let's hope history repeats itself again this year.
