San Antonio Texas Fiesta 2009

One of San Antonio’s most recognized and unique events is underway, and waiting for you to take part.  Fiesta is San Antonio’s answer to Mardi Gras, complete with music, food, art exhibitions, parades, and much more.

Originally started as a celebration for the heroes of the Alamo in 1891, the celebration has become a part of the fabric of life in San Antonio.  Certainly the most important event is the Battle of Flowers in which decorated figures wage war with flowers as their only arms.  Each year around 3.5 million people take part in the festivities, making Fiesta one of the largest celebrations in the country.

Another important event is ‘A Night in Old San Antonio‘, which is the largest historical preservation festival in the US, drawing over 80,000 visitors.  This festival features food booths, drinks, music and other entertainment, all for the noble cause of raising money and awareness of the city’s unique and special heritage.

Another can’t-miss event is the St. Mary’s Oyster Bake, featuring 100,000 oysters being served, along with live music and a fantastic fireworks finale.

Finally, no Fiesta would be complete without a visit to the Alamodome for the sights, sounds, and excitement of Carnival.  Adults visiting will be reminded of their childhood trips to the state fair, and children will be amazed by the different rides offered, along with circus acts, food, and music with a distinctive Tex-Mex flavor.  Wristbands are available for weekdays offering unlimited rides for $18, and weekend passes are $20.  Kids of all ages will find something to fit their desires, from water rides, to inflated bouncy rides, to roller coasters and fun houses.  A little bit circus, a little bit state fair, Carnival is a can’t miss extravaganza!

Fiesta is underway, and whatever your idea of fun is, there is something available.  San Antonio Fiesta is the one time of the year when San Antonio is in full bloom, so check the schedule and support this fantastic city!
