The home crowd of the San Antonio Spurs is one of the most supportive in the league. Since the team's beginnings in the American Basketball Association through three National Basketball Association championships, the fans have always been there to cheer for their beloved Spurs. It was not always so, for there was a time when the team's management thought about moving to another city, but the team stayed in San Antonio to delight their fans and win the championship against all odds. The San Antonio fans have always shown their support by record breaking ticket sales during home games and street parties during hometown wins.
The Spurs are not just known for hometown wins though, the team also holds the record for the longest winning streak on the road in 2003, making the Spurs a team to be reckoned with at home and on the road. It was also in 2003 that the Spurs won their NBA title, winning over the three-time defending champions the Los Angeles Lakers. This is quite a turnaround from the 1988-89 season when the Spurs posted one of the leagues worst records. The team owes its success to the players and coaches who have shaped the Spurs into a powerhouse of the Western Conference. Casual fans remember the Spurs as the team of David Robinson and think of it as the team of Tim Duncan, it is also the team that beat the Lakers and won the NBA title. Although the San Antonio Spurs were ousted twice in the Playoffs to the Lakers, their pursuit of the NBA Championship led them to eventual victory. Where the Spurs will go from here is anyone's guess. They are currently ranked #2 in the Southwestern division, and with a stable lineup of some of the best players in the league, they will surely go far. Let's just hope that they don't end up facing the Dallas Mavericks again in the first round of the playoffs. This would derive the spurs faithful fans of the added excitement of a Spurs-Mavs game late in the playoffs. Will this year be the year that the Spurs win their fourth NBA title? We can be sure that the Spurs fans in San Antonio will be cheering them all the way to the playoffs. So if Tim Duncan will lead the Spurs to victory this year, we can be sure the Spurs fans and the rest of San Antonio are keeping their fingers crossed. Trackback(0)
