Atascosa County is located immediately to the south of Bexar County and the city of San Antonio. It is named for the river which bisects it. The county seat was originally Pleasanton; but in 1910 was moved to Jourdanton, which was established rather late for Texas, in the early 1900s. It is also the birthplace of country singing star George Strait.

Other towns in Atascosa – which is predominantly rural and agricultural – include Charlotte, Lytle and Poteet. Poteet is famous for the yearly strawberry festival, held every year in April – and claimed to be the largest agricultural festival in Texas. The comic-strip character of “Poteet” Canyon was named for the town and modeled on a Texas girl by artist Milt Caniff for his “Steve Canyon” comic strip after a talent hunt in the 1950s.

Pleasanton, originally the county seat, claims to be the birthplace of the cowboy – and houses the Longhorn Museum, with many relics of the great days of the Texas cattle boom years just after the Civil War. Pleasanton holds a “Cowboy Homecoming” yearly, at the Atascosa River Park in the town.
