Mansions & Upscale Neighborhoods Where They Hide
There are million-dollar and more luxury mansions on the market in San Antonio; some are scattered about where you would expect, in the older and more historical neighborhoods of Alamo Heights, Terrell Hills and Alta Vista. These neighborhoods were established and built up in the first half of the 20th century, clustered just north of downtown San Antonio, centered on various parks and recreation areas of Breckenridge and Olmos Parks, and the San Antonio Country Club – not to mention Trinity University and the University of the Incarnate Word. Monticello Park, north of Woodlawn Lake is situated to the west of these older neighborhoods, within the loop.
These are all pleasing and prestigious old neighborhoods, convenient to downtown San Antonio; frequently the largest of those mansions in those areas which come on the market have historic interest, or were architect-designed. The very oldest upscale suburb in San Antonio – the historic King William District is slightly to the south of downtown and dates from the last decades of the 19th century. Most of these neighborhoods lie within the 410 Loop Road, the innermost of the two loop roads circumnavigating San Antonio, and in some cases, only the length of a small city block from rather less prestigious neighborhoods
Outside the 410 loop, a number of up-scale neighborhoods and communities most likely to encompass million-dollar luxury properties were established beginning in the late 1940s down through the present day – again to the north of downtown. Some are gated communities along or adjacent to Blanco Road, Thousand Oaks, Huebner Road or the 281/McAllister Freeway in roughly the north-central area. This includes wooded enclaves such as Inverness, Deerfield, Bluffview, Shavano Park and others. Frequently, the presence of high-end and luxury homes in these neighborhoods is not immediately obvious to the casual visitor traveling along the main thoroughfares.
