San Antonio has been associated with a military establishment since the Spanish Colonial days, when a certain tumble-down mission was reconstituted as a presidio, which went from hand to hand, militarily speaking according to who was in charge in any given decade over the last two hundred years: the Spanish crown, independent Mexico, Republic of Texas, the federal government of the United States of America, the Confederate States of America, and the federal government of the USA . . . well, you get the point. Forts, bases, camps, airfields and special activities and establishments accumulated around San Antonio like small sea creatures attaching themselves in layers to a sturdy bit of coral reef. Members of the military have passed through San Antonio in a pretty stead flood; some of them stay and some of them only stay a while.
The San Antonio military bases provides service members intending to stay a while or for those on a cross-country run are a selection of (Morale, Recreation and Welfare) MWR RV parks and campgrounds:
There is one on the grounds of historic Fort Sam Houston, offering all the usual amenities one comes to expect at modern Recreational Vehicle Campgrounds. Fort Sam Houston's RV Park was named the 2007-08 Family Campground of the Year by the Special Military Active-Retired Travel Club (SMART). With 59 RV pull-through sites with full hookups. Restroom and shower facilities with Laundromat. A clubhouse with a small convenience and a relaxing lounge area with business center. There is also a tent-camping area, all at a rate substantially less than a comparable civilian facility. Stays at Fort Sam are limited to a month, however. Fort Sam Houston's MWR also sponsors another RV park at scenic Canyon Lake, on Creek Park Road, just outside of Canyon City. The campground is on the lake; besides Recreational Vehicle (RV) sites and campsites, there are a selection of cottages and cabanas. The cottages offer full amenities, the cabanas a somewhat more limited set of conveniences. Reservations are required for the cottages and cabanas, but the RV and camping sites are on a first-come, first served basis. Phone: 888-882-9878
A second military RV campsite at Canyon Lake is sponsored by Randolph AFB's MWR division. The Randolph Canyon Lake Recreational Park is located on Jacob's Creek Park Road . Accommodations include a small number of cabins and shelters and a generous number of tent campsites. Reservations are not required for the tent sites, but are necessary for all others, and a deposit must be paid at the time the reservation is made. Directions to Randolph Canyon Lake Recreational Park: From I-35 north from San Antonio to Canyon Lake exit (Exit 191). Turn left on Farm Road 306, follow for 16 miles through Canyon City. Turn left onto Jacobs Creek Park Road (sign for Recreation Area). Go straight for approximately 1/2 mile to the Randolph Recreation Area on the left. Phone: 830-964-2942
Lackland AFB offers the FamCamp, which is available for RV's only - no cottages or tent campsites - with the customary amenities. There is no requirement for reservations; first come, first served, with a month limitation on stays. Lackland FAM Camp is located behind the Wilford Hall Medical Center at Bldg. 2804 on Foster Ave. adjacent to Fisher House #3. Phone 210-215-0404
All of these facilities are available to active duty military, to National Guard members, reservists, and to military retirees. Policies, amenities and availability at these facilities will vary, so consult each for specific requirements and limitations. Wi-Fi Internet and satellite or cable TV is available at many locations.
